  • About the Edition

Abundance and an index of abundance were estimated for a population of burbot Lota lota in Fielding Lake. Burbot were captured in baited hoop traps set in a systematic pattern across Fielding Lake. Sampling occurred during June of 1998. Estimated mean CPUE per 48-hour set of fully (450 mm TL and longer) and partially (300 to 449 mm TL) recruited burbot in Fielding Lake was 0.84 (SE = 0.11) and 0.42 (SE = 0.07), respectively. In 1997, estimated abundance of fully recruited burbot was 420 (SE = 58). An estimated density of fully recruited burbot was 0.78 (SE = 0.11) fish per hectare. An estimated 57.3% (SE = 7.8) fully recruited burbot survived from 1996 to 1997.

Burbot Lota lota maculosa numbers in Kootenay Lake and Kootenai River of British Columbia, Idaho, and Montana have diminished due to habitat changes from the construction of Libby Dam. Recent implementation of a conservation strategy included aquaculture to supplement the population using a donor stock from a self-sustaining lake population within the by: 6.

The benthic boundary layer is the zone of water and sediment immediately adjacent to the bottom of a sea, lake, or river. This zone is of considerable interest to biologists, geochemists, sedimentologists, and engineers because of very strong gradients of energy, dissolved and solid chemical components, suspended matter, and the number of organisms that live there.

The bottom substrates of White Lake are predominantly mud. Based on sediment core sampling conducted inmuch of the lake was found to have dqwsits of ttiick marl (d^osits of calcium from biological and sedimentary processes) (Mathers and Kerr ). Tlie pH of the lake water ranges from There is no.

In fishless habitats, mortality is. “Burbot interact with many other fish. They like to eat a lot of sculpins, which are eaten by lake trout, and sculpins eat lake trout eggs. Knowing more about when and how burbot spawn adds more information to figure out the interactions between species.” The findings could also help with efforts to count burbot.
